Research

Nicci completed her PhD in 2010 on the language of police interviews with women reporting rape. Focussing on the means by which interviewers exert their control over the unfolding talk, the thesis uncovers a number of interactional  resources routinely drawn on by investigators, and discusses the potential implications of such choices for the quality of evidence gathered and for victim care. The research has formed the basis for the design and delivery of interview training components that have been delivered to police forces nation-wide, with the support of the British Association of Applied Linguistics.
